Business person Why? Individuals dealing with crises or any process of changeare susceptibleto stress and fatigue. In the workplace, concrete symptoms of the individual’s situation may appear in form of reduced performance and in some cases absence due to illness. Impaired productivity, delays, and unnecessary mistakes, possibly leading to financial loss, are other undesirable but common consequences. To be confronted with a co-worker’s personal problems or crises can be extremely difficult. For whom? For any one who suffers from stress symptoms, insomnia, fatigue, other anxiety related symptoms, substance abuse or addictions. Course of treatment Usually we first meet for an assessment. One of the most important factors for therapy to be effective is that the relationship between client and therapist feels safe and trusting. That is why it is advisable to meet a few times in order to give the client the chance to decide whether it feels right for him/her. Some seek help for a specific, clearly defined problem. Others may be interested in how current problems came to develop and in how they continue to affect their quality of life. Cognitive therapy When therapy begins we define the problems at hand and then specify one or several goals for the treatment. Traditional cognitive therapy usually focuses on reducing symptoms and on teaching skills for problem solving. In order to accomplish that, the client is given some form of homework between each session. Cognitive therapy is a team effort between client and therapist. The process can vary in length of time, but usually we meet for 10-20 sessions. Schema therapy Just as in cognitive therapy, we investigate together what problems exist. In addition to conversation and discussion we work with assignments that help us define which “schemas” (see main topic) the client has developed. The client will gain an intellectual understanding of how these schemas evolved and we go on to working with acquiring an emotional understanding through different alternative techniques such as visualization and role plays. We also work on finding new coping strategies which will help the client in obtaining more satisfactory results. Schema therapy can also be used to define or elucidate a problem, and the length of the process varies according to need. Addiction Initially the problem is mapped out. How does it manifest? What would the client like to achieve? What is the degree of motivation and how much does the client believe in his/her ability? As in all cognitive therapy the conceptualization or the individual chart is a guideline for the treatment. Together we investigate the connection between the triggering situations, thoughts, feelings, actions and consequences; we go on to evaluate new possible approaches. The client can then decide on a realistic goal for treatment. Fee/Agreements A session is 50 minutes long and we usually meet once a week, or every other week.
